Good stories; Poor re-coloringAug 12, 2009
First off, Storm Shadow is one of the coolest characters that exists, whether in the G.I. Joe universe or outside of it. So, it's great that IDW is releasing these classic reprints of the original Marvel series. The stories themselves hold up to the test of time. Larry Hama clearly has a good grasp on his character's voices and actions. He crafts well written stories which involve a large cast of characters, and for the most part it doesn't come off as too cheesy. The pencil-work is handled by a few different folks, but for the most part the book has a fairly consistent look to it. Those are the positives.
What knocks this down to 3 stars is the extremely poor re-coloring job that was done! I don't know why IDW felt they had to re-color the artwork, but it is absolutely amateurish and almost unbearable to look at. Maybe it was done for legal reasons; otherwise I can't think of any good reason they would do this. You can really see the difference on pages 70-72 (if memory serves me correctly). For whatever reason, they forgot or neglected to re-color these pages, and these pages stand out as so far superior in quality that it's astounding! There's actual shadowing, line work, etc. instead of monochromatic coloring that makes the artwork look flat and just plain ridiculous. There are some scenes where a character's hair is a different color in one panel right next to another panel. There are some scenes where Gung-Ho's head (scalp) is blue. It's very weird and distracting.
I was originally going to give this book only 2 stars, but it's not the writer's or the original artist's fault whatsoever. Please, IDW, stop doing this. The same goes for the Snake Eyes book, and surely the rest of the line. If you want to read the book just for the words, by all means do so. But, if you're even remotely interested in the artwork, track down the 6 back issues contained in this volume. You'll be glad you did.

This was very cool and reminded me of growing up with these comics. This was in perfect shape and I'm very glad I got this.
